Haunted farms in America

Everybody knows that the world in general is in the middle of an economic downturn. And American farms are also suffering. Only 45% of American farms are operating at a profit.

However, some American farmers have a novel solution to their economic problems. They have created "Haunted farms"

There are an estimated 500 "Haunted Farms" in America.

The Bates Motel, located west of Philadelphia Pennsylvania, makes over one million dollars in a year.

Can this work in Japan? I don't see why not. Japan has a rich tradition of ghosts, and there are many legends of haunted battlefields and tragic love affairs from ancient times. For example, Kamakura is full of ghost legends.

An interesting idea. But please don't upset the "real" ghosts!

North Korea does it again.

Well, North Korea has done it again. This shelling of a South Korean island is one of the worst incidents since the armistice was signed in 1953.

Will there be a war? I think it is possible.

Are US forces absolutely necessary? No.

All right, after the Cheonan affair earlier this year, I wrote the following two posts about a war in Korea.

How North Korea commando forces would not be decisive in a war.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.com/2010/05/second-korean-war.html

And what damage Japan could expect in such a war.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.com/2010/06/second-korean-war-and-its-possible.html

The conclusions in my above two posts are still valid. Even without the US Marines in Okinawa, or US aircraft based in Japan, or the US troops in South Korea, South Korea would easily win an all out war with North Korea.

But why this attack now? Why two attacks in one year, if we include the sinking of the Cheonan?

I am now going to make an educated guess. I do not think the Kim family succession is going well. The succession from Kim Il Sung to Kim Jong Il took years to set up. Kim Il Sung was a genuinely respected person in North Korea. After all, he was the leader in the Korean war.

And after that war, living conditions actually did improve somewhat. Nothing like in South Korea, but there was at least enough food. But that depended on the help of the Soviet Union and China. Kim Il Sung was able to play off China and the Soviet Union against each other.

But the cold war has ended. The Soviet Union is now Russia, and Russia has cast off a lot of it's foreign supported states that only had political significance. China provides just enough support to keep North Korea functioning. China's interest here is to keep North Korea intact so that North Eastern China is not overrun with starving Korean refugees.

The thing is, and I am guessing here, Kim Jong Il has not gotten the same reverence from the North Korea elite, both civilian and military, as the father Kim Jong Il did. Kim Jong Il certainly likes the ladies, he even had sex playmates imported from Sweden. And every year, the North Korean military would scour the country in search of beautiful women to serve as sex playmates for Kim Jong Il.

And Kim Jong Il is quite a gourmet, and loves expensive wines and alcohol. In a country where the populace is starving. There are many palatial residences across the country for the use of Kim Jong Il and his family.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8110093.stm
The North Korean currency reform of November 2009 was a particular disaster. It's purpose was to eliminate private markets and bring back socialist control. The government quickly backed down and reinstated private markets.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/17/north-korea-famine-fears

I have been to Korea, South Korea, and I will say that culturally Koreans are a conservative people. Particualry when it comes to sexual issues. My guess here is that many people in the North Korean elite would not approve of Kim Jong Il's antics in the sexual area, and in general his sybaritic lifestyle.

But in a country like North Korea, voicing disapproval of the regime can be fatal. So people keep their feelings to themselves.

However, Kim Jong Il never was able to find a substitute for Soviet Russian and Chinese support. And the currency reform was a disaster. Prospects for an improvement of life in North Korea are dim.

And now, Kim Jong Il has introduced his son, Kim Jong Un. Who is only 27 years old.

It is my guess that there are some plots going on, some people in North Korean have had enough of the Kim family, and do not want to see a child at the throne.

Kim Jong Il's playboy lifestyle has caught up with him, he does not have long to live.

I think the recent artillery attack on a South Korean army was another bid to build the legitimacy for Kim Jong Un. As was the previous sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan.

If Kim Jong Il thinks more attacks are necessary to provide his son's succession, then that means he is having problems. And we might see more attacks in the near future.

And Kim Jong Il's health is not good, he does not have much time. Even with this second attack, pressure on the South Korean government to retaliate will be immense. Some general in North Korea could see this as the time to do something.

I think the possibility of war is strong. North Korea is desperate. At worst, Japan will get some hits from North Korean missiles. But the North Korean military does have a lot of artillery that can hit Seoul.

And for all those that will start crying about how essential American forces are, they are not. They cannot prevent a war from happening, and they cannot win it by themselves. They are symbolic.

But this war, if it happens, will be a humanitarian tragedy, waves of refugees will be moving into South Korea and China, the number reaching Japan will be fewer. If North Korea shells Seoul, the South Korean economy will be devastated.

It will be a mess.

Note: Some 56% of Americans oppose having US forces fight in a Korean war. They feel Korea should do it themselves. So will Americans support Japan in the Senkaku's? I think not. Americans still want to be friendly with Japan and South Korea, but the need for the old military alliance is fading.

A proposal for a future Japanese/American alliance

So do we really need a Japanese/American military alliance? Well, strictly for the defense of Japan from any possible enemy, no we don't. I have shown that Japan can defend itself, in my post the third Japanese Chinese war.

So if the purpose of the alliance is not to protect Japan, what then is it's purpose? Well, the main use of US bases in Japan is power projection of US force around the world. But I think it is time for the alliance to evolve to a new stage.

But would we need so many US troops constantly based in Japan?

No. An interesting example is the Philippines.

http://www.wowessays.com/dbase/ae4/lmy301.shtml
America has a Visiting Forces Agreement, where they come back and help the Philippines on a temporary basis if such help is needed.

In the above link, we see that the Philippine Navy is weak, it only has 21 patrol vessels, none of them have any missile capability, and they are old.

Also, please note that in the above and below link, the Philippine Air Force does not posses a single combat jet fighter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Air_Force

Yet China has made no aggressive move against the main Philippine islands. The point of dispute with China is over control of various islands in the Spratly group in the South China Sea. And also note the US refuses to get drawn into promises to defend those islands from China.

I have seen the lines that China has drawn on maps of the Pacific, but seriously, China even lacks the ability to invade the Philippines.

I think part of the problem here is pride. China sees itself not as a developing country, as Americans think of China, but as country with about the longest history in the world. Now, after several hundred years of humiliation by Western countries, it is gaining enough military power to defend itself.

Look at the link below. It is about the Russian aircraft carrier Varyag. Construction on the ship was stopped when the Soviet Union started to collapse in 1990. In 1998, it was bought by a Chinese business man, the idea was to turn it into a hotel and casino combo in Macao.

A rather odd choice, don't you think? Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper just to build a hotel that looks like a ship?

One problem with the ship was that since she was not completed, her engines had never been started and were inoperable. She had to be towed by tugs from Sevastopol to China.

In any case, the ship ended up docked not in Macao, but Dairen Naval port. And she is now painted in the Chinese Naval paint scheme.

On the website below, look at and click the photos on the left side.

http://www.varyagworld.com/

You will see that China has three aircraft carrier theme parks, two with the former Soviet Carriers Minsk and Kiev, and one with a replica of the US carrier Nimitz.

A country with THREE aircraft carrier theme parks? I think it is strange. It suggests to me that China has an inferiority complex about military power.

OK, in my previous post, I described how Japanese alone without American help can defeat a Chinese invasion attempt.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.com/2010/11/third-japanese-chinese-war.html

As I have said, the Philippine Navy has only a few patrol type warships. And no fighter aircraft. The Philippine Army has some 120,000 troops.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Army

But they would be no match in case of war with China. Now some people are panicking and saying that if America withdraws from Okinawa, China will invade the next day.

But then why hasn't China invaded the Philippines? If China truly wants access to the Central Pacific, wouldn't the Philippines be an easier target than Japan?

I think the answer goes like this. It really doesn't gain them anything.

I think there are some officers in the Chinese government and military who are feeling martial pride, and drawing lines on sea maps.

Yet there are other officials who have more common sense, and see no reason to provoke war. A war China would be sure to lose.

Now let me talk a little more about Americans. Americans are people full of fear. They try to create a world 100% free of risk. Recently, every time some Al Qaeda terrorist makes a bomb attempt, Americans rush around in panic trying to devise a counter measure.

When the guy with bomb in his shoe was stopped by other passengers from exploding his device, now people have to take off their shoes for inspection before boarding their aircraft. When another terrorist tried to set off a bomb in his underwear, we have the body scanner machines that see us completely naked.

http://www.alternet.org/story/148886/%27porno_scanner%27_scandal_shows_the_idiocy_of_america%27s_zero_risk_culture

If you refuse a body scanner search, you must be searched by hand, with TSA (Transportation Security Authority) officers touching your genitals in front of other waiting passengers. If you refuse both, you can be investigated and fined $11,000.

全身スキャナーを拒否した場合、TSA(Transportation Security Authority, 運輸保安局)の検査官が身体検査を行い、待っている他の乗客の前で、性器をさわります。

http://motherjones.com/mojo/2010/11/tsa-john-tyner-sane-airport-security-system

In the above link, we see aircraft security professionals talk about what is truly needed for aircraft security, reinforced cockpit doors and passengers fighting back. It was passengers fighting back that defeated the shoe bomber and the underwear bomber.

Finally, large numbers of Americans are beginning to protest against these invasive security procedures as a violation of privacy.

Yet American officials, afraid of being accused of doing nothing, overreact. And some companies make a lot of money with new and useless security equipment.

The recent trouble over the Senkaku islands is exactly the same. It was only a Chinese fishing boat with an aggressive captain. Yet the American side and some Japanese people are acting as if Japan was in Great Danger.

It was just a fishing boat. And in my previous post, the third Japanese Chinese war, I have proven that China lacks the military capability to attack Japan at this time.

I am aware that China is increasing it's Naval activity. Well this can be combatted by a combination of building more ships ourselves, and negotiations.

And perhaps part of the reason for the Chinese buildup is fear of the American military based in Japan.

But again, at the present time, China cannot invade Japan or even Taiwan.

So I think the future of the Japanese/American military alliance can be a combination of visiting forces rotating through Japan, US forces temporarily based in Japan, and pre positioned stocks of US military equipment.

The Cold War war is long over. We no longer need US forces in Japan on hair trigger alert. If a military crises does occur, a build up towards that crises will occur. This will allow time for US forces to transit to Japan.

But the future need of US forces in Japan is unlikely. All we need to do in Japan is to keep building enough new warships to keep pace with China.

I have before written about cadre level units and pre positioned equipment.

In the link below, it describes pre positioning. This is equipment that is stored on ship near an area of likely trouble.

In this link, we have 88 tanks, 54 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, 331 other tracked vehicles, and 849 wheeled vehicles, stored on 10 merchant ships. This is enough equipment for a mechanized Army Brigade.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/army/aps-3.htm
In an emergency, US troops would fly in to link up with the equipment. Within a week or so of an emergency, they could all be linked up and ready to fight.

Certainly, as I have proven in my third Japanese Chinese war post, the Japanese Armed Forces could hold off any potential enemy until then.

Also, bringing US military dependents back to the US would be a cost saver. We would only need a cadre, a skeleton crew, of US troops actually based in Japan to maintain and oversee the equipment.

The same procedure can be applied to US air units. In Japan we store munitions and spare parts for American aircraft. In an emergency, the aircraft fly in, ground crew flies in by transport aircraft. They could be operational within days of a "GO" order.

GO!"

This would also be cheaper for America, as they would only pay rent for their equipment. I don't think Japan should pay any host Nation support, as Japan can provide for it's own security.

I think these ideas present a much more rational idea for the Japanese American alliance. I do realize that America uses bases in Japan to support it's wars in the Middle East. Again, this does not mean large units need to be forward based in Japan. The most important bases in this regard would be Kadena, Yokota, and Yokosuka. Yokota and Kadena would serve a transport function to the conflict in the Middle East, Yokosuka as ship maintenance facility.

Other bases could revert to Japan.

But we can really cut down on Marine and Air Force combat units based in Japan, without damaging Japanese security.

We should not panic so much, and we should not always live in fear.

Will America really fight for the Senkaku's?

Will America actually defend the Senkaku islands for Japan? I think President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton were sincere in their promises to Japan.

However, President Obama's promise was not all that strong. According to Professor Juan Cole, a Middle Eastern expert at the University of Michigan, it is only a temporary promise.

Quote from the article, in the Chapter, "Superpower with feet of clay"

Quote:

In response, the Obama administration quickly turned mealy-mouthed, affirming that while the islands come under American commitments to defend Japan for the time being, it would take no position on the question of who ultimately owned them.

Unquote.

Nicholas Kristof, a very influential columnist with the New York Times, feels that the islands are Chinese. He admits that America does have treaty obligations to defend Japanese territory, but he also points out that the American government refuses to make an explicit statement that the Senkaku's are indeed Japanese.

Nicholas Kristof

http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/10/look-out-for-the-diaoyu-islands/#more-6399

The fact is, America is truly in the middle on this question. I believe that American elites want friendship with both countries. However, I don't think the average American feels so. Having lived in America, I know that the average American thinks about WWII like it was yesterday.

Very unfortunately, the average American has very little knowledge about the truth of events in WWII. But I can say that while most Americans would support defending Japan from an attack on the main inhabited Japanese islands, I don't think they would be so willing to go to war over uninhabited disputed territory.

So we really have to be careful about completely believing any American statement concerning the Senkaku's. Also remember, Americans have always dreamt of that China market. All China has to do in this is hint that they might buy American goods, and America just might throw it's relationship with Japan aside.

Remember, America is in a desperate economic situation, which in my opinion, has no solution. The Chinese don't have to really do anything, just hint, Americans will believe it.

In any case, I am sorry to say that President Obama is proving to be a very weak President.

President Obama bailed out US banks and financial institutions after the collapse of Lehman Brothers. He did not put anybody in prison. When I grew up in America 40 years ago, the types of financial transactions that caused the crises of 2008 would have been considered crimes.

Yet now it turns out the same people, in the same financial institutions and banks, have an even bigger crises on the way in the form of a foreclosure crisis.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/16/robosigners-foreclosures_n_784098.html

President Obama has also not been able to hold his ground on the war in Afghanistan. When he became President, he promised to withdraw from Afghanistan by 2011. Well that is now being extended to 2014 or beyond.

http://my.firedoglake.com/Jane-2/2010/11/10/obama-administration-walking-away-from-2011-afghan-withdrawal/
This is one of the stupidest, most hopeless wars that America has every engaged in. It is much worse than Vietnam. After 9 years of fighting, the Afghan Army still does not exist.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ann-jones/meet-the-afghan-army-is-i_b_292864.html

The police are worse, they actively help the Taliban. And President Karzai is called "The Mayor of Kabul" by the international media because that is the only part of the country he controls.

Yet President Obama cannot give up the war effort, the military is forcing him to string it along.

And also, we must remember that the Republican party, with it's recent political victory by Tea Party members, is promising to fight against anything President Obama tries to do.

So can President Obama push through an order to defend the Senkaku islands from China for Japan, if it is unpopular in the United States? I doubt it.

In this problem, Japan is alone. In any case, the Japanese military is quite sufficient to defend all of it's territory, as I proved in my last blog post.

The third Japanese Chinese war

The other day, I found an article in a Japanese English language newspaper that rather angered me.

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20101014f1.html

I have never met the person who wrote this article, but after reading it, I felt insulted. The tone of his article was that American Marines are needed for the protection of Japan. He totally ignores the fact that Japan possesses a strong military. This writer seems to assume that the Japanese military is helpless. So yes, I do get rather angry with people who panic and say we need the American military to help us. The truth is, Japan is not at all helpless.

In a previous post, I wrote about how China had backed down in the face of world opinion and the Japanese Coast Guard. The Japanese Navy played no part, and US forces played no part.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.com/2010/10/concerning-recent-troubles-over-senkaku.html

I think this is the significant aspect to this incident. Actually, China is too weak to really push this incident. Recent television news news reports have shown that the Chinese government is discouraging domestic demonstrations about the Senkaku's.

Now let us get to the military discussion of the Senkaku issue. Some people assume that if US forces left Japan, the next day, China would invade the Senkaku islands.

This is preposterous. OK, let us work out how a Chinese invasion would play out. This is fairly easy to do, all it really involves a lot of counting. First of all, let us look at how many troops China could put ashore in an invasion of a Japanese island.

According to this source that I listed previously, China has the ability to land 53,220 troops. Well OK, forget the helicopters in an invasion of a Japanese island. They don't have the range. That gives us a total of 45,860 troops.

http://www.china-defense.com/naval/plaas/plaas_3.html
That sounds scary, doesn't it. They could just take over Okinawa, couldn't they? Not really.

All right, not including Americans, Japan has a troop unit of 2,100 in Okinawa right now according to this source.

http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001/90777/90851/6932297.html

As a rule of thumb, an invading force should be at least 5 times the strength of the defender to succeed in an amphibious invasion. This would mean 10,000 Chinese troops.

So we have those 45,860 Chinese troops, for China it should be easy to invade Okinawa, right?

Wrong. The problem for China is not the numbers of infantry, everybody knows they have a huge army. The problem will be amphibious lift capability. If China ever decides to go war, all of it's amphibious warfare vessels will not be capable of movement.

Let me make another guess, and say that China can get 80% of it's amphibious warfare vessels in operating condition. And I think I am being generous here, I don't think that maintenance will be that fantastic in China. So we can subtract 9,000 troops, that makes 36,860 troops China can put ashore in a first wave.

Well in the article I linked to, it seems that the writer cannot envision a Japanese military response to possible Chinese invasion.

Well I can.

Japan has ground forces of 147,000.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Ground_Self-Defense_Force
China has 58 submarines, and 77 surface warships in it's Navy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Liberation_Army_Navy

Japan has 48 surface warships, and 16 submarines.

Japanese Aircraft Carrier Hyuga.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_ships_of_the_Japan_Maritime_Self-Defense_Force
The Japanese Coast Guard has 121 Patrol vessels, of which many are armed.

One thing to remember. China cannot concentrate more than half of it's Naval forces against Japan. Some Naval forces must be left to watch Taiwan, others must watch Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

So that gives us numbers like this:

Chinese 29 submarines, 39 surface warships, versus 16 Japanese submarines, 48 surface warships, and some 121 Coast Guard vessels.

A few points to consider. Almost all of the Chinese ships, particularly the submarines, will be old with older technology. Most of the Japanese ships are new, with more modern technology.

Japan also has some 80 Lockheed P-3C anti submarine aircraft. These are very good sub hunters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Maritime_Self-Defense_Force

It would take a couple of days for any Chinese invasion fleet to reach Okinawa from a Chinese port. Japan would be easily able to send ground troops to all Japanese islands in the area by air and sea transport. In an emergency, civilian aircraft and ferries could be used.

The Chinese surface warships would be tied to escorting the amphibious landing ships, that fleet would have a basically predictable course. As the fleet approaches Japanese islands, it would become more difficult for the Chinese Air Force to protect them. Their aircraft would not be able to spend more than a few minutes each over the fleet as the range from Chinese airfields increases.

On the other hand, Japanese ships can attack form any direction. Japanese aircraft would be fighting near their bases, they would have more time for aerial combat than the Chinese Air Force. Also, Chinese aircraft will generally be trying to protect the convoy, they will be flying a predictable course.

Frankly, I doubt if any Chinese vessels would survive such a battle. What troops that China could land on Japanese territory, they could easily be mopped up by Japanese ground troops.

The Chinese know this, I seriously doubt that they will attack. And that is why they backed down over the recent Senkaku problem when faced with the Japanese Coast Guard.

Estimated losses in such a battle.

This is a guess, as we have never yet seen a massive sea battle with post WWII weaponry. However, I am assuming general Japanese superiority in the electronic sphere. Also, Japan will operating close to it's ports of Naha and Kagoshima. Damaged Japanese ships and aircraft will have a good chance to reach safety, while Chinese ships and aircraft will not. Also, Japanese pilots who must bail out will tend to be rescued, Chinese pilots who must bail out have no chance of rescue. The ocean area east of the Ryukyu island chain will be mostly free of Chinese warships. No Chinese surface ship will survive very long there. Even Chinese submarines will live a dangerous life.

So the losses estimate.

China: Surface warships and amphibious ships: 90%. Submarines: 50% to 75%. Aircraft: 50%

Japan: Surface warships: 25%. Submarines: 1 or 2. Aircraft: 10%

I have not included Japanese Coast Guard vessels in the above estimate. In the main, I do not think they would be used to take on the Chinese fleet, but instead to patrol various areas, and to rescue downed pilots. It is possible that a few of Coast guard vessels might be sunk, but not so many.

While I do think it possible that up to some few thousand Chinese troops could succeed in landing on Japanese territory, with losses such as above, China cannot reinforce them. They all shall become prisoners.

And China cannot ignore Taiwan, or the possibility of Vietnam or other powers taking action in the South China sea.

China will lose much more than any possible gain. They will not attack. It is not necessary to keep American troops permanently based in Japan on permanent alert. The Japanese Self Defense forces alone are sufficient to protect Japan.

Note: While I said that there has not been a modern surface Naval battle between major powers since WWII, we have an interesting example of air combat in The Falklands war in 1982.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falklands_War
Most islands in the Ryukyu chain have airfields.

But in general, we can say that the situation for Air Forces here will be similar, the Chinese situation will resemble the Argentine situation, the Japanese situation will resemble the situation of the British.

Simply counting the Argentine Air Force, they lost 49 out of 138 aircraft committed, while British losses in air combat were few. That is about 36%.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentine_air_forces_in_the_Falklands_War

Britain lost 6 out of 28 committed. Now, that is 21%.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_air_services_in_the_Falklands_War

However, the age of the aircraft, and pilot quality, were much closer between Argentina and Britain in the Falklands conflict. I think Japan will do better.

Concerning the Senkaku affair video release

Well, a video of the Chinese fishing boat incident in the Senkaku islands has recently ignited a media storm.

But let's look at this realistically. We learned nothing new from this. We already knew that the Chinese fishing boat captain acted aggressively and arrogantly.

But I wonder why the government did not release the video themselves. It did not seem to be any great secret.

In any case, in this affair, China blundered. Other countries have rare earths, Japan and other nations are developing other sources for rare earths.

Japan and Vietnam, a traditional rival of China, are developing close ties.

And China, while it's economy is booming now, might be facing a dark future. There are at least 12 major new cities under construction, but nobody lives in them. It looks like the beginning of an economically dangerous massive real estate bubble to me.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/20/business/global/20ghost.html?_r=2

http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1975397,00.html

I have before had experience on television debates in discussing with Chinese people such things as copyright violations.

http://www.japanprobe.com/2007/05/02/disneyland-in-china/
The Chinese side was very defensive, they said they had changed things like the eyes on the characters in the Chinese Disneyland knock off. Well, in the international business community, this kind of thing is not tolerated. And in the television debate I told them so.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.com/2009/09/japan_17.html
China has suffered great damage to it's prestige over the recent Senkaku incident. They looked like a big bully. And since then, their Navy has been patrolling their side of the line. I think that is really to prevent more Chinese fishing boats from causing trouble. Well and good. We will patrol our side of the line.

But I also think, by backing down, and sending police to break up demonstrations about the affair inside China, the Chinese government has made a tacit admission that the islands are indeed Japanese.

It would make China look like a horrible monster if they revived the question at a later date.

So let us give China some time. I think they have learned a lesson here. I hope in the future they take a more correct attitude towards international relations and business.

And after all, China is our neighbor, we have to get along with them. And I think they will learn something from this.

Thoughts on the American Mid Term elections

A few thoughts on the American mid term elections. The Tea Party put some 45 new people in the Senate and in Congress. While some of their high profile people like Christine O'Donnell and Sharron Angle lost, this is still impressive.

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/11/03/5403120-just-32-of-tea-party-candidates-win
So what does this mean for America, and their relationship with Japan?

I think the Tea Party is now the dominant force in American politics and society. They toppled long time Republican politicians like Charlie Crist of Florida, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska is still fighting for her life.

For the Tea Party people, traditional Republicans are just as much an enemy as the Democratic Party is. So all non Tea Party affiliated Republicans will be watching them with fear. They will tend to support Tea Party positions.

The difficult thing in analyzing the Tea Party is that they really don't have many things they are for. What they are is a movement that is really against present American society.

Several of the things they are likely to try to do.

Eliminate the Department of Education.

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/10/28/eliminate-dept-educ/

Eliminate the right of American citizenship by birth.

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/10/26/gop-birthright-citizenship/

And privatize Social Security.

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/10/27/gop-privatize-socialsecurity/

I have written that the Christian Fundamentalist movement is behind the Tea Party. Attacking education has always been one of their priorities. They wish to eliminate all non Christian Fundamentalist education in the United States. So eliminating the US Department of Education would be an important step in this direction. To their thinking, all American schools should be completely controlled and funded by local communities.

This would basically be the end of all standard education in America. There would be no standards, no funding for poorer communities. There would be no education in science, mathematics, foreign languages or history.

But the Christian Fundamentalist thinking is that education in their idea of the Bible is sufficient.

Americans are very concerned about immigrants. There are many Americans, like Texas Republican Congressman Louis Gohmert, who feel that terrorists will send pregnant women into the United States, the child will be born in America as an American citizen. The mother and child will then return to their home country. The child will then receive terrorist training, and return to America 25 years later to commit terrorist acts.

http://blog.buzzflash.com/honors/378

As for privatizing Social Security, in my opinion, ALL American banks and financial institutions are now tainted by massive fraud, ALL are incapable of managing themselves and should be audited by government. This is unlikely to happen. If Social Security is privatized, the lifeline for millions of Americans will disappear. This plan will only make a few more financial managers rich, and impoverish millions.

Frankly, all three of the above ideas are stupid and ridiculous, but this is what kind of people are participating in the Tea Party.

American government in the future is going to be increasingly deadlocked. The Republicans are saying that there will be no cooperation with President Obama, the President must obey their demands.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/07/eric-cantor-compromise-tax-cuts-obama_n_780029.html
As far as foreign policy, well there are more and more calls for war with Iran.

Some people want war with Iran because they think it will improve the US economy.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/01/david-broder-war-with-ira_n_777013.html

Others, like Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican, South Carolina, want to destroy their military.

The true reason for American hatred of Iran is the revolution of 1979. Average Americans see this as a rejection of American culture. The thing is, Iran is a very traditional Moslem country. They want to be friends with the United States, but they wish to keep their own culture.

The average American cannot understand this. To them this is an insult, the entire world must adopt American culture. Or be an enemy of America.

Average Americans have never respected education, they prefer to rely on something called " conventional wisdom", what people know naturally without studying.

The Christian Flag

What this means is that they are a group of stupid ignorant people. I think that in the future, when confronted with a difficult situation in foreign or domestic affairs, they will tend to make demands that people obey their orders, and if that doesn't work, they will react with violence.

As far as the relationship between America and Japan, Americans will become more demanding. In particular, I think they will demand we pay more for their military. There is a complexity in the Japanese Chinese relationship, the Senkaku affair.

I doubt that Tea Party Americans can understand this. They will look for the simplest answer. But in Japan we must always remember that Americans have always dreamed of the Chinese market.

If these simplistic Right wing Americans believe they can sell American goods to China, they will not value Japanese friendship. The fact that America no longer really produces any manufactured goods that China might buy is irrelevant.

And Americans have never really trusted Japan. Well, in Japan, we should not feel bad, Americans really don't like or trust ANY other country, even Great Britain.

The woman in the above link ran for Congress as a Democrat in Texas. She lost. But part of her ideas was that the United States should attack Great Britain, because British banks are destroying the United States.

She also shows us that stupidity is not a Republican monopoly. One out of five Americans believe that the sun revolves around the earth.

I think there is little hope for the United States to maintain itself as unified country with such stupidity so common. America has always had an anti-intellectual tradition. Now the idiots are gaining power through the Tea Party movement, they will try and destroy whatever education and knowledge is left in America.

I think this is difficult for Japanese people to understand. Most Japanese who go to the United States as a business person or as a student tend to meet the more intelligent Americans. They just don't come in contact with the average stupid American.

Well, now the idiots are getting in charge. I don't think Japan can depend on America being a reliable friend anymore, we are going to have to find our own way.
