The American and Israeli relationship, Part One

Before President Obama assumed office, there was an Israeli attack on Gaza, that lasted some three weeks. Many Japanese people were shocked at the attack. Also, the nature of the American response surprised many people in Japan. In this blog piece, I will try to make an explanation of the American Israeli relationship.

But to truly understand this relationship, we must first take a look at history. One of the most important dates in Jewish history is the year 70A.D. Until that year, the Jewish kingdoms had basically existed in the land that is now Israel. In that year, Roman forces defeated a Jewish revolt against Roman Imperial rule.

And here is where Jewish history became unique. The Roman destruction of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem in the year 70, and fighting a couple of hundred years later, caused Jewish people to spread into exile across the Roman Empire. At that time, the Roman Empire included the entire Mediterranean Sea.

So Jewish people scattered over a wide area. But where other peoples and tribes would disappear into the majority populations, this did not happen with Jewish people. They maintained their own religion, and did not marry into other cultures. Around the year 1,000, a language unique to the Jewish people in Europe evolved, Yiddish. It is a form of German, written with the Hebrew alphabet, and with many Hebrew words. It was commonly spoken by Jews throughout Eastern Europe, no matter what country they lived in.

The Middle Ages in European history is one of extreme ignorance and life was hard. Often the kings or princes of various lands could not themselves read. Yet Jewish people tended to be literate, often in several languages, they tended to be clerks, financiers, and doctors.

Around the year 1,000, Christianity became the national religion of European nations. At that time, Christian dogma held the Jewish people responsible for the death of Jesus.

And here is where much trouble started. The Jewish people had a religion different than the people where they lived. They spoke different languages, and did not often inter marry with other people. Or other people would not inter marry with them. And as financiers and businessmen, they were often wealthier than the common people of many countries.

So in times of difficulty, Jewish communities were often attacked and Jewish people killed. In fact Jewish people were often forced to live in segregated areas of a city by order of the local king. It is from these areas that we get the modern word Ghetto. In modern America, a Ghetto refers to an area where poor minority people live, usually Black or Hispanic Americans.

But hundreds of years ago, particularly in Eastern Europe, it was where the Jewish people lived. Persecutions of Jewish people were called pogroms; masses of angry Christian mobs would go through the Jewish Ghettos, burning, robbing, and killing. These riots could be set off by various events. For example, during the Black Death in Europe, many Jewish people were blamed for spreading the plague.

Actually, fewer Jewish people died from the plague than Christians. Jewish people tended to have higher education, and lived more sanitary lives, this evoked resentment.

So to sum up Jewish history from the Roman suppression of Jewish revolts, up until modern times, Jews lived as somewhat separate people from the Christian population. They were often blamed for political or natural disasters, and often attacked and killed, often for no particular reason. The Jewish people rarely responded to these attacks with violence, they simply endured. Yet their culture and religion also endured.

To be continued

The Second Wave of the American Financial Crisis.

I think everyone is Japan is aware of the banking crisis that has hit America. Well, I think it is time for people to prepare for the second wave of this problem. And that second wave is going to be a surge of personal credit card default.

More and more Americans are losing their jobs, or their income is being reduced. So to make ends meet, they are maxing out their credit cards to maintain their standard of living. I have seen figures of something 10% of credit holders defaulting.

American credit cards are complex, and have many hidden charges and penalties. And most banks, if you are late with one payment, jack up your interest rates to 29%. In fact, a lot of the bailout money given to banks by the US government, has been used in lobbying efforts in Washington to protect the banks right to charge such interest. And of course the bank officers did receive bonuses, despite having run their companies into the ground.

However, by having so many penalties on personal credit card holders, this will only cause the percentage of defaulters to rise. And to cover the loss, the banks raise rates again, causing more people to default, eventually the entire system collapses.

But I cannot just say banks are evil. The attitudes of the average American are also very immature and over optimistic when it comes to financial affairs. Americans do not have savings, they depend on credit.

Now I was born in America, and I do know how this mindset works. People are very optimistic in America; they think things will always get better. This is part of the concept of American exceptionalism, that Americans are intrinsically superior in all things. Americans feel that bad things cannot happen to them, because they are Americans. And by chance if something bad does happen, somewhere there will be an authority to help them out.

Well for many years, this was the case, as the United States was the world’s single most powerful country for the last 60 years. But that is no longer true, and the American economy has hit a brick wall. The American people really do not understand the true nature of this crisis; people keep thinking a little more work by the government will solve it.

If you are in America, there is enormous social pressure to have several credit cards, and run up debt. Advertising on television constantly puts things before you, strongly encouraging you to buy them. Sometimes, when I listen to an advertisement on American radio, almost every one contains the words, “easy credit”. However, people do not think they are creating debt.

If you do not have a credit card, life in America can be difficult. I have never had a credit card in my life, I do not like them. Yet I remember staying in a hotel on a business trip in the United States and paying for the room in cash. Since I did not have a card, the staff asked me if I was a criminal. I was shocked. I explained to them that I lived in Japan, and that many Japanese do not have credit cards, we have a cash economy.

They really could not comprehend what I was saying. In any case, a greatly increasing amount of Americans are now finding themselves poor. Formerly middle class people are having to go to food banks and soup kitchens to eat.

So I think this crisis in America can only get much much worse. When it finally bottoms out, we will have an economic structure in the United States that will unlike anything that every existed before. My guess will be that a national interlinked economy will hardly exist, most economic activity will be local. And that it will something like the economy of France in the Middle Ages.

The January Sumo Basho

Here is the Max Sumo analysis for this year’s opening Basho. This time, I waited until the new Banzuke came out before writing it. The reason is, I was curious as to what the Sumo Association would do with the rankings.

In the Maegashira rankings, out of ranks one to six, both East and West, only two rikishi got a kachi/koshi, Kyokutenho and Goeido. So that makes them both Komusubi. And that East Hito is Hokutoriki, jumped up from East 7, and West Hito is Kakuryu, up from West 8. Kakuryu is getting better and better, as for Hokutoriki, well I think he has spent too much time specializing in Hatakikomi. When an opponent gets close to him, he just doesn’t know what to do with his arms, so my guess would be he will fall down again to the middle Maegashira ranks.

My hero, Homasho, came away with a respectable 11 wins, and is now Maegashira 7 East. It looks like he has gotten over that wrist injury. Speaking of injuries, we have Aminishiki, Toyonoshima, and Kotomitsuki. Both Aminishiki and Toyonoshima got caught by the strong arm of Kaio, I hope they have recovered. But I think Kotomitsuki has more serious problem with his gout. Has he really cured himself, and can he compete? He is kadoban, he has no choice.

Of the other Ozeki, Harumafuji pulled victory from the jaws of defeat by just making his kachi/koshi. As a new Ozeki, he had a lot of mental pressure. Harumafuji likes to make sure his Sumo is picture perfect, and I think that is what caused him to drop all those bouts at the beginning of the tournament. But he beat Hakuho, which strongly affected the final outcome of the Basho. This is what Ozeki are supposed to do, challenge the Yokozuna.

Kotooshu made 10 wins, which is supposed to be the minimum for a respectable Ozeki. Come on guy, keep it up. Now Kaio and Chiyotaikai. Well Kaio showed that even though he is one of the oldest guys, he is still powerful. His arm crush forced Aminishiki and Toyonoshima to sit out the Basho. I was there at the Kokugikan on the 5th day, and saw Kaio beat Kyokutenho. Kyokutenho was trying so hard to beat Kaio that his back turned red, but Kaio was just too strong.

Now Chiyotaikai is another story. He got kachi/koshi, but his Sumo is really weak. I really did not think it was Ozeki class Sumo. I think he should either raise the level of his game, or retire.

Hakuho was steady as always, and even though he did not win the championship, he is a great Yokozuna. Asashyoryu won the championship, he is back. But he was not the Asashyoryu of old who would just clobber opponents in seconds. This time, he had a few scares, almost losing a bout, and he took longer to win. I think he can get back to his old self, but he is going to have to train train train.

I met a very interesting gentleman at the Kokugikan, a Mister Yamada Naotoshi. He always wears a gold top hat with a Japanese flag, and waves a golden Japanese fan with a Japanese flag. He reminded me of the American symbol, Uncle Sam. He is quite active in promoting Japanese sports, in baseball and the Olympics besides Sumo.

He has many deep life experiences, and I was impressed by his thinking. One phrase of his in particular stuck in my memory, that is “Life is like an echo”. His meaning is, you get back the same feelings that you give out to people. If you call someone an idiot, that is what will come back to you. If you treat people with kindness, that will come back to you as well. Very simple words, but the meaning is deep.

Well let’s all have fun watching the Osaka Basho!
